Christmas / New Year - 2011 / 12
Well it’s that time of year once again, when everybody goes crazy, racing to spend their hard earned year-end bonuses. Save-a-Pet would like to take this opportunity to remind you that there are ±200 dogs and puppies plus a few cats and kittens that will be looking forward to their Christmas / New Year presents too. So we ask you to please spare a thought for the animals. Come along to the kennels with a box of dog biscuits for instance and see their eyes light up like your Christmas tree at home! We are open every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day from 10.00am to 3.00pm. The animals will be cared for on those two days by the workers who drew the short straws!
Christmas came early at Save-a-Pet thanks to SMS Portal of Newton Park in Port Elizabeth, whose Marketing Manager, Louise Wolmarans rang our chairman, Dave Bath, and told him that they wished to make a donation to a project rather than a straight cash donation, Dave sent a list of four projects that needed funding namely;
1. Kennel extensions in Row 4
When Save-a-Pet moved into grounds of the old SPCA in Greenbushes in 2003, Mavis Smith, the founder, stated that no dogs would be moved into the kennels that had been built many years ago. The kennels were narrow and dark, a terrible place to keep an animal. We decided to remove adjoining vibracrete panels resulting in kennels space doubling in size. Later we would remove two or three rows of panelling with the result that kennels increased in size by up to four times the original size. We also decided that the kennels could be extended in front of the concrete kennels, twice the depth of the original kennels, using galvanised metal poles and wire mesh thus allowing the dogs so much more freedom.
2. Dog Exercising
Currently the dog walkers have to walk past most of the kennels leading to the dogs in these kennels getting unnecessarily upset. In conjunction with the kennel extensions, at the far end of each row of kennels there is a need to install gates to give easy access to the exercise area avoiding walking past all the other kennels and exciting and upsetting the other dogs.
3. New Kennels
Many of the wooden kennels need replacing despite being coated with a preservative.
4. Educational Booklets
The booklets are aimed at schoolchildren in the hope that when they are adults they will remember what they read in the book about how to treat and how not to treat their dogs.
SMS Portal (continued)
Item 1 was selected by SMS Portal so Row 4 dogs have much more freedom early next year.
